About Words & Water

My earliest memories are of newspaper headlines, magazine layouts, and the sound of my father’s typewriter. In Rome, I worked for the A.P., Newsweek, and Vatican Radio, then the San Francisco Bay Guardian and the (Hearst) Examiner, and was a Knight Bagehot Fellow in Business & Economics at Columbia Journalism School. I was almost drowned by a sleeper wave on the Sonoma coast when I was five years old. I’ve had to learn to love my fear of the ocean to swim year round in San Francisco Bay without a wetsuit. I’m a recovering journalist who is learning to write all over again.

I'm a recovering journalist wild swimming my way to the writing I was meant to do. Working with fear in the water and on the page, understanding family, true tales of Old San Francisco, pondering Catholic politics, and the resistance.
